Axminster War Memorial Rededication Ceremony – Monday 15 July 2024

The war memorial project was concluded last Monday with the rededication ceremony attended by Town Mayor, Cllr. Jill Farrow, Chairman of the Axminster Branch of the Royal British Legion, Mr Peter Slimon, parishioners and our children from St Mary’s Catholic Primary School. Although it was rainy weather, this didn’t dampen our spirits!
The first part of the ceremony, led by Fr Jacek, took place in the school hall with
prayers, hymns sung by the children , including these words:

“When I think about the Cross. When I think of Jesus

I’m reminded of His Love Love that never leaves me

Who am I that He should die giving love so freely.

When I think about the Cross help me to believe it.”

This was followed by the Roll of Honour and personal address delivered by Richard Salt (about Private Harold Spurway who died during the Second World War aged just 19) and a Gospel reading from a pupil. We then processed to the memorial where wreaths were laid by officials and pupils representing each class at the school.

It was a solemn and memorable occasion which followed a similar format to the ceremony held over 105 years ago when the memorial was first installed, and has increased the community’s awareness of the war memorial.

It certainly moved one of the children presenting one of the wreaths. The Headteacher reported the next day that this child had made a cross at home and brought it to school, gathering her friends around it to pray.

Here are some pictures of the event.

Farm Walk – Sunday 9 June 2024

Parishioners were invited to Lane End Farm, Uplyme for an afternoon country walk and talk. There were lambs, sheep, calves, cows, chickens, tractors, views and a trailer ride for the children. We are very grateful to Philip Mostyn and family for offering such a lovely event for all!

Parish Variety Event – 28 October 2023

Thank you to all who made our parish variety event so successful and enjoyable, from the wonderful variety of acts, volunteers with food, the raffle and setting out the hall, to those helping clear away at the end.  The inclement weather didn’t dampen our spirits and it was wonderful to see so many taking part.

Proceeds raised from the raffle and donations (before expenses) came to £469.

Parish Flower Festival – 3 – 4 August 2023, St Augustine, Seaton

On Thursday 3rd and Friday 4th August 2023, we opened the doors of St Augustine Church to welcome visitors to our Parish Flower Festival. It was a joyful two days with beautiful displays donated and arranged by our talented and generous parishioners.

The two days gave an opportunity for visitors to come into the church, to pray, light a candle, listen to the organ recitals, or simply sit quietly to reflect and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

The inclement weather didn’t dampen our spirits! After a visit to the church, tea, coffee, home made cakes and cream teas were served in the presbytery garden enjoyed by parishioners, holiday makers and passers by. All supported by a wonderful bank of volunteers.

All funds raised were for the maintenance of our three churches and we are very grateful for all donations received, including the generous donations of flowers and greenery.

The festival could not have been so successful without the tireless efforts of our wonderful volunteers – our tea ladies and gentlemen, our welcomers, musicians and flower arrangers and also all those who helped to set up before and clear away after.

Here are some photos of the beautiful displays.
