Thoughts from Thicket
Please see below regular reflections from the Carmel of the Annunciation, Thicket Priory, York who supply our altar breads.
The community was founded at Exmouth, Devon, in 1926 and their foundress was Mother Mary of Jesus, prioress of Notting Hill Carmel, who personally founded over 30 Carmelite monasteries in Britain.
By the 1950s it had become clear that the site of the Carmel in Exmouth was no longer suitable. After a long search, the sisters found a new home at Thicket Priory, moving in 1955 from Devon to Yorkshire.

This month’s Thoughts from Thicket…
1st November (All Saints)
“Unless we are inwardly touched by grace, we do not see holiness even when we encounter it. As soon as grace lets its light shine within us, however, our eyes are opened, and the holy becomes visible to us.” (St Edith Stein)
8th November (Remembrance Sunday)
“You know that for a Carmelite to remember and especially to love is to pray.” (St Thérèse of Lisieux)
15th November
“What attracts me to the homeland of heaven is the Lord’s call, the hope of loving him finally as I have so much desired to love him, and the thought that I shall be able to make him loved by a multitude of souls who will bless him eternally.” (St Thérèse of Lisieux)
22nd November (Christ the King)
“Christ reigns wherever there are men and women capable of loving and caring for others. Let’s not forget the words of St. John of the Cross: ‘When evening comes, you will be examined in love. Learn to love as God desires to be loved and abandon your own ways of acting.’” (Bishop Silvio José Báez, OCD)
29th November (1st Sunday of Advent)
“The holy time of Advent is here…..Let us empty our soul so He can come forth in it and communicate the eternal life that is its own; And then, in the silence of prayer, let us listen to Him, for He is the “Source” who speaks within us and who has said: ‘He who sent me is true, and I tell all I have heard from Him.’. (St Elizabeth of the Trinity)
